For many Member States and Stakeholders the adoption of a bioavailability approach represents a considerable challenge compared to the previous ways of working with metals, which was primarily through the use of hardness-banded EQS. A working group of interested Member States has been established to draft practical guidance on the implementation of the bioavailability-based approaches for metals. The guidance is to be specific and practical enough to deliver a way forward for compliance assessment and classification. Permitting effluent discharges using EQSbioavailable remains challenging and the UK regulatory authorities are currently considering this in a project that is scheduled to complete in the autumn of 2013.
