Stainless Steel Case Studies

The Nickel Institute has developed case studies from around the world to show the use of nickel-containing stainless steel.

Currently three case studies are available:

1:  A footbridge in Murcia, Spain

This footbridge in Águilas, a seaside town in south-eastern Spain, spans 35m over the Cañarete watercourse and joins the town to the marina. The use of duplex stainless steel facilitated a lightweight, durable and attractive structure.

2: The Queensway tunnel in England

Nearly 400 tonnes of nickel-containing stainless steel were used for the framework supporting a new cladding system inside the Queensway tunnel as part of a major refurbishment project. As well as having sufficient durability and robustness, the system was designed to minimise installation time (and hence tunnel closure).

3: A waste-to-Energy Plant in Melbourne, Australia

Eight stainless steel tanks were constructed as part of a new waste to energy plant in Wollert, a Melbourne suburb, which opened in 2017. The first of its kind in Australia, the 1 MW biogas facility will divert 33,000 tonnes of organic waste per year from traditional landfill, significantly reducing the burden on local landfills.
